Dear CUSD Families,
Our next parent workshop is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. The workshop is titled, From Phonics to Fluency: How Reading is Taught and How You Can Help, and will be facilitated by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction PK/TK-5, Brad Shearer; Reannah Sartoris, K-12 Humanities Coordinator II; and one of our amazing teachers, Kendra Gerhard from Concordia Elementary.
You can attend the workshop by visiting us at the CUSD Education Center at 33122 Valle Road in the city of San Juan Capistrano. The workshop will be held in the Board Room. If you attend the workshop in person, you will receive a complimentary copy of a children’s book appropriate for TK/Preschool to Grade 2 students. To attend in person, please RSVP at this link so we can ensure that we have enough books for all attendees (direct link in stories).

Just a quick reminder about the CA School Funding Meeting this Friday!

Where/When: MPR, Friday, 10/3 at 12:30pm

From class sizes, to combo classes, to opportunities for our kids, funding is an issue that impacts us all. District level PTA representatives will be coming to our school to talk with us about what PTA is doing at the District and State level to secure increased funding for our schools. We hope you will attend either in person, or via Zoom so that we can get informed and educate ourselves about this important issue!

We filled our table with all the beautiful produce our students grew last year as they learned about ecosystems, life cycles, watershed, pollinators, adaptations, biodiversity and sustainability. And then, our amazing @capofood created a harvest table tasting with the same produce we grew in the garden. Full circle and we loved it! 🫶🏼🍅🌱🌻

This year’s theme is “I Belong!” Students may participate by creating an artistic expression that represents this theme. Entries can be photographs, a piece of writing, an artwork, a video of dance choreography, a video of an original music composition, a short film or any other artistic expression! Submissions are due Sept. 26th. Be on the lookout for the Reflections Flyer in your child’s backpack. If you would like to help with this program by helping kids make art, or setting up a gallery of submissions, please contact Sarah Maanpaa at (323) 842-3616!

Our final Friday Flag of the year was a memorable one! We bid a fond farewell to Mr. Flores as he embarks on an exciting new journey—he will be deeply missed! We also celebrated and “officially” promoted all of our students to their next grade level.

One of the most touching moments came as our kindergartners took a special walk to meet their future teachers, while our fifth graders followed the same path—this time to thank the very educators who have guided and supported them over the years.

What a powerful way to close the year—so many emotions as we watched our first class of dual language learners graduate. A beautiful ending to a meaningful journey.

¡Nuestro último Friday Flag del año fue verdaderamente inolvidable! Nos despedimos con cariño del Sr. Flores mientras comienza una nueva etapa en su vida—¡lo vamos a extrañar muchísimo! También celebramos y “oficialmente” promovimos a todos nuestros estudiantes al siguiente grado.

Uno de los momentos más emotivos fue cuando nuestros estudiantes de kínder hicieron un recorrido especial para conocer a sus futuros maestros, mientras que nuestros alumnos de quinto grado caminaron ese mismo círculo, esta vez para agradecer a quienes los han apoyado a lo largo de los años.

Our final Friday Flag of the year was a memorable one! We bid a fond farewell to Mr. Flores as he embarks on an exciting new journey—he will be deeply missed! We also celebrated and “officially” promoted all of our students to their next grade level.

One of the most touching moments came as our kindergartners took a special walk to meet their future teachers, while our fifth graders followed the same path—this time to thank the very educators who have guided and supported them over the years.

What a powerful way to close the year—so many emotions as we watched our first class of dual language learners graduate. A beautiful ending to a meaningful journey.

¡Nuestro último Friday Flag del año fue verdaderamente inolvidable! Nos despedimos con cariño del Sr. Flores mientras comienza una nueva etapa en su vida—¡lo vamos a extrañar muchísimo! También celebramos y “oficialmente” promovimos a todos nuestros estudiantes al siguiente grado.

Uno de los momentos más emotivos fue cuando nuestros estudiantes de kínder hicieron un recorrido especial para conocer a sus futuros maestros, mientras que nuestros alumnos de quinto grado caminaron ese mismo círculo, esta vez para agradecer a quienes los han apoyado a lo largo de los años.

Last week, our fourth graders truly came to life—in both English and Spanish—during our Living Wax Museum! Depending on the button each visitor pressed, students delivered their presentations in either language, showcasing their bilingual skills. They worked incredibly hard and had a blast learning about historical figures, bringing them to life for their families through thoughtful research and creative presentations.

Don Hansen, Donna’s dad, made the commitment to support RH Dana a decade ago and take students out on boats in their own neighborhood. We are very lucky!! We are so excited to announce that our sensory play space is open! We love all our students and know that every child deserves fun and engaging spaces to play at school! Thank you to all the folks who made this happen over the last year including our donor who provided funding, the special education team at RH who chose the equipment, CUSD facilities for ensuring we did everything right, and Dave Bang playgrounds for the beautiful products and install. It takes a village! 💛¡Nos emociona anunciar que nuestro espacio de juego sensorial ya está abierto! Amamos a todos nuestros estudiantes y sabemos que cada niño merece espacios divertidos y atractivos para jugar en la escuela. Gracias a todos los que hicieron posible esto durante el último año, incluyendo a nuestro donante que proporcionó los fondos, al equipo de educación especial de RH que eligió el equipo, a las instalaciones de CUSD por asegurar que todo saliera bien y a los patios de recreo Dave Bang por los hermosos productos y la instalación. ¡Se necesita una comunidad! 💛
